Bonney is a village in Brazoria County, Texas, in the coastal prairie of the upper Gulf Coast. It holds the distinction of being the smallest incorporated village in the state, with a population of 180 at the 2020 census. It lies along Farm-to-Market Road 521, about ten miles north of Angleton, the county seat, and roughly 37 miles south of Houston. The village traces its origins to 1873, when it was established as a station on the International-Great Northern Railroad. It was named for a conductor on the Columbia Tap Railroad, and a post office and general store followed by the late 1880s, giving Bonney the outline of a small rail-side settlement. The area also carries deeper historical significance: it was the site of China Grove, the plantation home of Albert Sidney Johnston, the Confederate general killed at the Battle of Shiloh. For most of its history, Bonney has remained a quiet, sparsely populated community, its small size preserved by the surrounding farmland and its location just off the main highway. Today the village functions primarily as a residential community, with residents drawing on Angleton for schools, shopping, and services while remaining within commuting distance of Houston and the growing Brazoria County corridor. Bonney's setting is part of its appeal. The village sits amid the flat, fertile coastal prairie of Brazoria County, a landscape of farm fields, live oaks, and scattered ranchland that gives way to the bays and beaches of the Gulf Coast to the south. This setting, combined with the village's tiny scale, keeps daily life quiet and unhurried, with the traffic and density of the Houston metro a comfortable distance to the north. Public education is provided by the Angleton Independent School District. As the Houston region has expanded southward along the Texas 288 corridor, Bonney has remained a small residential holdout, retaining its incorporated village government and rural character while benefiting from proximity to the region's growth.
