Bridge City is a city in Orange County, Texas, at the far southeast corner of the state, where the Neches River and Cow Bayou meet the coastal marshes just above Sabine Lake. It lies within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area, with Port Arthur directly across the river. The city began as the small settlement of Prairie View on the upper Texas coastal grasslands and took the name Bridge City after the Port Arthur–Orange Bridge—now the Rainbow Bridge—opened over the Neches River in 1938, replacing an old ferry. The community's modern identity is tied to both water and industry. The Rainbow Bridge and the adjacent Veterans Memorial Bridge carry State Highways 87 and 73 across the Neches, and all three major roads into Bridge City cross a body of water. To the south, Sabine Lake and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway provide some of the region's best saltwater fishing, and the Lower Neches Wildlife Management Area draws birders and hunters to its marshes and backwaters. The town's position between fresh and salt water—where the Neches, Cow Bayou, and Sabine Lake meet—makes it popular with boaters and anglers.
