Camp Wood is a small city in Real County, Texas, in the western reaches of the Texas Hill Country on the Edwards Plateau. With about 520 residents, it is one of the least-populated incorporated communities in the region, defined less by size than by its setting on the Nueces River and its position at the center of the Nueces Canyon. The community's history is tied to the land and the river. The name recalls the military camp that once stood nearby, and for much of the twentieth century the town's population held steady in the several hundreds. Over time, the area's natural beauty—clear spring-fed water, rugged limestone hills, and deep shade along the river—drew outside interest, with much of the surrounding land held by people drawn to the Hill Country's scenery and recreation. The Nueces River is the town's defining feature. It is a full municipal government providing water, sewer, and local services, and it hosts the elementary campus of the Nueces Canyon Consolidated Independent School District in its downtown. State Highway 55 is the main route through town, linking Camp Wood southwest toward Uvalde and north toward the rest of the Hill Country.
