Atascosa County Town
Apartments in Christine, TX
Welcome to Christine, a small Atascosa County town in South Texas along Farm Road 140, just south of Jourdanton amid ranch and farm country.
Christine is a small town in Atascosa County, in south-central Texas, located about ten miles south of Jourdanton along Farm Road 140. With a population of 337 at the 2020 census, it is a compact rural community set in a landscape of ranchland and farm country that stretches between the San Antonio region and the Rio Grande Valley. The town was founded in 1909 by Dr. C.F. Simmons, a Missouri physician, and developed as a small agricultural and trading center for the surrounding countryside. In its early decades it supported a school, churches, and a handful of businesses that served local families. Over time, as rural population patterns shifted and transportation improved, the town consolidated its institutions, with its high school closing in 1948 and the school district annexed to Jourdanton in 1954. Economically, the Christine area has been tied to both agriculture and, at times, to mineral and energy activity. The Atascosa Mining Company and the San Miguel Power Plant operated in the vicinity in the early 1980s, reflecting the region's role in South Texas energy production. Today the surrounding economy is anchored by ranching, farming, and the service centers of nearby towns. For residents, Christine offers a distinctly rural way of life. Students attend Jourdanton Independent School District campuses a short drive to the north, and the county seat provides the nearest concentration of shopping and services. The town's small population and open surroundings appeal to those who want acreage, privacy, and a slower pace, with San Antonio reachable for larger-city amenities. Christine is a place defined by its South Texas ranch-country setting rather than by growth or development.
