Combine is a small city straddling the Dallas–Kaufman county line, about twenty miles southeast of downtown Dallas. It sits just off U.S. Highway 175, at the intersection of Farm roads 3039 and 1389, in a part of the Dallas metroplex that still carries a semi-rural, small-town feel. To the west, Seagoville—which grew to surround Combine—provides immediate neighbors and services; to the east, Crandall and the Kaufman County countryside continue toward the lake country of East Texas. The settlement that became Combine appeared in the late 1880s or early 1890s, likely as a rural farming community in the post-oak country between the Trinity River and the Blackland Prairie. It stayed small for generations, counting fewer than 300 people as recently as 1970. As Seagoville and the Dallas suburbs expanded around it, Combine residents incorporated their community, and the city grew to roughly 2,200 people by 2020. Combine's identity is shaped by its unusual position: part in Dallas County, part in Kaufman County, with the county line running through the community. That split shows up most visibly in the schools, since students on the Kaufman County side attend Crandall Independent School District while those on the Dallas County side attend Dallas ISD. It also gives the city a foot in two different development patterns—one tied to the fast-growing Dallas suburbs and one tied to Kaufman County's still-agricultural eastern reaches. For residents, Combine offers a quiet, low-density alternative within easy commuting distance of Dallas. U.S. Highway 175 is the main route into the city, and nearby Interstate 20 adds another cross-metro option. The semi-rural surroundings, the proximity of Seagoville's Post Oak Preserve, and the recreation of Cedar Creek Lake to the southeast define the area's outdoor character. The result is a small incorporated community that sits, by design, on the edge between suburban Dallas and rural East Texas. Shopping, dining, and civic services are drawn largely from Seagoville, Crandall, and the larger Kaufman County towns, keeping Combine itself primarily residential.
