German Hill Country Heritage

Lots & Land in Comfort, TX

Welcome to Comfort, a Kendall County Hill Country community founded by German Freethinkers in 1854, known for its well-preserved historic district, cypress-lined creek, and wine-country setting.

Comfort is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kendall County, Texas, set along Cypress Creek in the rolling Texas Hill Country northwest of San Antonio. Founded in 1854 by German Freethinkers and abolitionists, the town carries one of the most distinctive settlement histories in the Hill Country, and much of its early built fabric remains intact — a large portion of the community is listed as a National Historic District, with some two dozen historic markers documenting its story. The town's German roots set it apart. Unlike many Hill Country settlements founded by church-centered immigrant groups, Comfort was established by freethinking intellectuals opposed to slavery, and that independent, civic-minded strain runs through its history. The Treue der Union Monument, commemorating German Texans who died opposing the Confederacy, is among the community's most significant landmarks. The cypress-lined creek, limestone buildings, and restored storefronts along the historic district give Comfort a visual character that few towns its size can match. Comfort functions today as both a residential community and a Hill Country destination. Its historic business district holds antique shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms, while the surrounding countryside is dotted with wineries and preserves. Interstate 10 runs nearby, connecting the community to Boerne and San Antonio to the southeast and Kerrville and the western Hill Country beyond. With a population of roughly 2,200, Comfort is small and largely residential beyond its visitor-facing core. It is served by the Comfort Independent School District and appeals to households drawn to Hill Country scenery, historic architecture, and a quieter pace, with the amenities of Boerne and San Antonio within reach. The community's identity is inseparable from its German-Texan heritage and its unusually well-preserved downtown.
