Tarrant County New Deal Town

Townhouses & Duplexes in Dalworthington Gardens, TX

Welcome to Dalworthington Gardens, a New Deal-era city in Tarrant County whose name blends Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington.

Dalworthington Gardens is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, surrounded entirely by Arlington and situated in the heart of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The city's name is a portmanteau of Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington, the three larger cities it sits among. Dalworthington Gardens counted 2,293 residents in the 2020 census. The community's origins are distinctive. In early 1934, during the Great Depression, the federal government established it as a subsistence-homestead project under the Resettlement Administration, one of many New Deal communities intended to help families grow their own food and gain a foothold on the land. The federal government allotted funds to establish homesteads where residents kept vegetable gardens and worked toward self-sufficiency. Early residents formed a cooperative, and the community later incorporated as a town. Unlike many similar federal projects that were absorbed by their host cities, Dalworthington Gardens survived as an independent municipality. Today the city covers about 1.8 square miles, much of it residential, and is completely encircled by Arlington. Its northern border adjoins Pantego, another small town similarly surrounded by Arlington. That arrangement gives Dalworthington Gardens a distinctly quieter, garden-community character set against the larger urban fabric around it. Because of its unusual origins, the city has long prided itself on its independence and its garden-community layout, which set it apart from the surrounding suburban sprawl. Students attend the Arlington Independent School District. The city's location places residents within minutes of Arlington's entertainment and employment centers and within easy reach of both Dallas and Fort Worth. Dalworthington Gardens remains a small, self-governed enclave with a New Deal heritage, preserving a low-density, suburban feel in one of the nation's largest metropolitan areas, and it continues to attract residents seeking a small-town atmosphere with big-city access.
