Alsatian Heritage Town
Apartments in Dhanis, TX
Welcome to D'Hanis, a Medina County community founded by Alsatian settlers in 1847, known for its signature red brick and its place in Texas Hill Country heritage.
D'Hanis is a census-designated place in central Medina County, Texas, in the Hill Country west of San Antonio. Part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan area, it had a population of 785 at the 2020 census. The community is best known for two things: its Alsatian founding and its unusual history of relocation. The settlement was established in 1847 by Alsatian immigrants brought to Texas under the empresario Henri Castro, the figure behind nearby Castroville. Named for an official of the Castro company, D'Hanis grew as a farming and ranching community. When the railroad bypassed the original townsite in 1881, the town's residents moved to a new location along the tracks, creating a second D'Hanis that thrived as a shipping point for cattle, cotton, and, most notably, brick. Brick-making became the community's signature industry. The D'Hanis brick works produced a distinctive red brick that was shipped to markets across the region and remains a point of local pride and architectural heritage. That industrial legacy, combined with the area's agricultural base, shaped the community's economy through the early 20th century. Today D'Hanis is a quiet rural community. It is served by its own small district, D'Hanis Independent School District, which anchors local life, and residents look to Hondo, the Medina County seat, for shopping and services. The surrounding countryside of ranchland and gentle hills offers space and scenery, while San Antonio lies within commuting range. D'Hanis is a place defined by immigrant heritage, brick-making tradition, and the measured rhythms of Hill Country rural life.
