Double Oak is a town in Denton County, Texas, in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The town sits in the southern part of the county, amid the fast-growing communities that developed north of Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport, including Flower Mound, Highland Village, and Lewisville. Double Oak counted 3,054 residents in the 2020 census. The area's history predates its incorporation by nearly a century. A school district served the Double Oak area as early as 1884, reflecting an established rural community long before suburban growth arrived. The town was not incorporated until 1974, however, when suburban sprawl from Dallas–Fort Worth reached the area; at incorporation, its population stood at about 243. Growth followed through the following decades, with the population reaching 836 by 1980 and continuing to climb as the metroplex expanded northward. Today Double Oak is a largely residential town, with single-family homes on spacious, wooded lots and a community-oriented, low-density character. Most of the town is served by the Lewisville Independent School District, while a western portion falls within the Denton Independent School District. Grapevine Lake lies nearby to the southwest, offering recreation. The surrounding area provides extensive shopping and dining along the FM 2499 corridor and in nearby Flower Mound and Highland Village, while Double Oak's own residents value the town's open lots and neighborhood atmosphere. Commuters reach the metroplex's employment centers, DFW International Airport, and the region's lakes and parks within a short drive. Double Oak's position in southern Denton County keeps it convenient to the wider region, while the town itself retains a quieter, more rural-residential feel than many of its neighbors.
