Milam County Brazos River Community

Apartments in Gause, TX

Welcome to Gause, a small Milam County community along U.S. 79 between Cameron and Bryan, set near Sugarloaf Mountain and the Brazos River.

Gause is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Milam County, Texas, in the east-central part of the state. It sits along U.S. Highway 79/190, about 16 miles southeast of Cameron, the county seat, and roughly 29 miles west of Bryan. The 2020 census counted around 260 residents, and the community has long functioned as a small rural crossroads serving the surrounding farms and ranches of the Brazos Valley. The landscape around Gause is defined by two notable features. Sugarloaf Mountain, the highest point in Milam County, rises near the community and carries deep cultural significance: the 60-acre site is sacred to the Tonkawa people, and the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma purchased the property from private owners to preserve it as a heritage site. To the east, the Brazos River forms part of the county's geography, providing access for fishing and paddling through Texas Parks and Wildlife access points. Gause grew as a farming settlement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with a post office, school, and a handful of businesses serving the surrounding agricultural community. The Handbook of Texas recorded about 400 residents and several businesses in the early 1990s, and the community has since settled into a compact residential scale. Today it remains a quiet, close-knit place where the local school is a central gathering point. The community suits those seeking rural living with convenient highway access. U.S. Highway 79/190 links Gause directly to Cameron and Hearne to the west and to Bryan-College Station to the east, bringing university-town employment, shopping, and healthcare within a short drive while residents keep the space and pace of country life.
