Piney Woods Town by Lake Hawkins

Apartments in Hawkins, TX

Welcome to Hawkins, a Wood County town in the Piney Woods of East Texas, set between Lake Hawkins and Holly Lake Ranch and home to Jarvis Christian University.

Hawkins is a city in the southeastern corner of Wood County, Texas, in the gently rolling Piney Woods of East Texas. Positioned about twenty miles north of Tyler and roughly one hundred miles east of Dallas, the town sits at the junction of U.S. Highway 80 and Farm Road 14, along the historic highway corridor between Mineola and Big Sandy. The 2020 census counted 1,274 residents. Hawkins grew up around the railroad and agriculture, then boomed with the East Texas oil discoveries of the early twentieth century, a chapter still celebrated in local tradition. The town's identity is also tied to education: Jarvis Christian University, a historically Black institution founded in 1912, sits just east of the city limits and has long been a defining presence in the community. Hawkins holds the title of Pancake Capital of Texas, a designation recognized by the state and a nod to a local syrup-producing heritage. The community is framed by water and woods. Lake Hawkins, a Wood County reservoir on the edge of town, provides fishing, boating, and shoreline recreation, while the surrounding Piney Woods offer a distinctly green, forested landscape that sets East Texas apart from the plains to the west. To the north, Holly Lake Ranch — a private, gated community spanning more than 3,000 wooded acres with golf courses, private lakes, and recreational amenities — extends the area's resort-oriented residential options. Public education is provided by Hawkins Independent School District, serving the town and surrounding rural areas. For residents, Hawkins combines small-town East Texas living with convenient access to Tyler's medical, retail, and employment base, reached by highway and Interstate 20. Its mix of lake access, forested setting, and a small university gives the town a distinctive, unhurried character. The result is a community that appeals to retirees, families, and those drawn to lake and woodland living within commuting distance of Tyler and Longview.
