The Livable Forest

Apartments in Kingwood, TX

Welcome to Kingwood, Houston's "Livable Forest" — a heavily wooded 14,000-acre master-planned community northeast of downtown with roughly 75 miles of greenbelt trails.

Kingwood is a 14,000-acre master-planned community in northeast Houston, Texas, the majority of it in Harris County with a small portion extending into Montgomery County. Known by its longtime slogan "The Livable Forest," it is the largest master-planned community in Harris County and one of the best-known planned developments in the Houston region. The community was founded in 1970, with its first village opening in 1971, and it grew steadily through the following decades as Houston expanded northward. The community's defining trait is its wooded setting. Streets wind beneath a canopy of pines, oaks, and magnolias, and the development was laid out to preserve green space around the homes rather than clear-cut the forest. Kingwood is organized into a series of named villages — including Sherwood Trails, Elm Grove, Mills Branch, Woodland Hills, Bear Branch, Hunters Ridge, and Greentree — each with its own mix of homes, parks, and neighborhood amenities. Kingwood's population is roughly 65,000, with a median age around 42. It draws a mix of families, professionals, and retirees, many of whom value the combination of wooded, suburban living with a manageable commute into central Houston. The community sits roughly 23 miles northeast of downtown Houston, near Lake Houston on the San Jacinto River. Public schools are provided by Humble Independent School District, which serves Kingwood along with the city of Humble and neighboring Atascocita. Kingwood High School, opened in 1979, and Kingwood Park High School anchor the community's secondary education, and the district enrolls roughly 48,000 students across its service area. Recreation is a hallmark of life here. Kingwood is threaded by the Greenbelt, a network of roughly 75 miles of paved, multi-use hiking and biking trails that connect neighborhoods to parks, schools, and shopping. Trails link into the Spring Creek Greenway, and nearby parks include East End Park and River Grove Park, with Lake Houston providing boating and waterfront recreation just beyond the community's edge. For transportation, U.S. Highway 59 (the Eastex Freeway) runs along Kingwood's western edge and offers a direct route into downtown Houston, while Northpark Drive and Kingwood Drive serve as internal corridors. The Kingwood Park & Ride provides a commuter bus link to downtown, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport lies only a short drive to the south.
