La Honda is an unincorporated community in the southern reaches of San Mateo County, California, nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains between the Santa Clara Valley and the Pacific coast. Its Spanish-derived name means "the sling," a nod to the deep, sling-shaped canyon where the settlement took root in the 1850s as a lumber and shingle-mill town.
