Leona Valley is a rural census-designated place in northern Los Angeles County, California, occupying the geographic Leona Valley between the Sierra Pelona Mountains and the Mojave Desert, just west of Palmdale and the Antelope Valley. The name comes from the Spanish word for lioness. With roughly 1,500 residents spread across about 18 square miles, it is one of the county's low-density rural communities, defined by open space, mountain backdrops, and a working agricultural landscape. Agriculture—especially cherry orchards—is central to Leona Valley's identity. For decades the valley's orchards have drawn visitors each early June for the Leona Valley Cherry Parade and Festival, a community event centered on the Leona Valley Community Building along Elizabeth Lake Road, complete with a parade, craft and food vendors, live music, pie-eating contests, and pick-your-own cherry harvests at local orchards. The festival has run for more than four decades and remains the community's signature gathering. Residentially, Leona Valley consists of single-family homes on larger lots, many with acreage, reflecting a rural lifestyle at the edge of the Antelope Valley. Most residents own their homes, and the community appeals to families, professionals, and retirees seeking space and quiet within reach of Palmdale and Lancaster. Public schooling runs through the Westside Union and Antelope Valley Union High School districts, with Hughes-Elizabeth Lakes Elementary serving local students and Quartz Hill High School nearby. Leona Valley's position west of Palmdale places it close to the Antelope Valley's services and commuter infrastructure while preserving a distinctly rural feel. Elizabeth Lake Road provides the main route through the valley, linking residents to Palmdale, the Antelope Valley Freeway (State Route 14), and onward connections into the greater Los Angeles region. The surrounding Sierra Pelona foothills offer hiking, and the broader Antelope Valley provides lakes, parks, and desert recreation.
