San Francisco Peninsula City

Lots & Land in Millbrae, CA

Welcome to Millbrae, a San Mateo County city on the San Francisco Peninsula, where BART and Caltrain meet just minutes from San Francisco International Airport.

Millbrae is a city in San Mateo County, California, on the San Francisco Peninsula, about fifteen miles south of downtown San Francisco. It covers roughly 3.3 square miles and has a population of about 23,000. The city's name combines the surname of Darius Ogden Mills, the nineteenth-century banker and financier whose estate encompassed the area, with the Scottish word "brae," meaning rolling hills or hillside — a fitting description of the city's sloping terrain. Millbrae's defining advantage is transportation. Its intermodal station is one of the few places in the Bay Area where BART and Caltrain meet in a single facility, offering direct rail service north to San Francisco, south along the Peninsula and Silicon Valley, and a one-stop connection to San Francisco International Airport, which sits immediately south of the city. SamTrans buses also feed the station, making Millbrae one of the most transit-accessible suburban cities on the Peninsula. The city grew slowly through the nineteenth century and developed into a suburban residential community as the Peninsula expanded. Today it is a family-oriented, largely built-out city with tree-lined streets, hillside homes, and a diverse commercial corridor along Broadway known for its restaurants. Millbrae students attend the Millbrae Elementary School District for kindergarten through eighth grade and the San Mateo Union High School District for high school, with Mills High School located in the city and consistently ranked among the stronger public schools in the state. For residents, Millbrae offers Peninsula suburban living with exceptional access to transit, the airport, and the employment centers of the Bay Area.
