San Fernando Valley Neighborhood

Apartments in Northridge, CA

Welcome to Northridge, a residential San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Los Angeles that is home to California State University, Northridge and the Northridge Fashion Center.

Northridge is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of the City of Los Angeles, in the northwestern corner of the valley floor. With roughly 70,000 residents, it is a predominantly residential, suburban community laid out along broad north-south and east-west boulevards, and it sits within Los Angeles County just south of the Santa Susana Mountains. The neighborhood's identity is shaped above all by California State University, Northridge (CSUN), one of the largest campuses in the California State University system, and by the Northridge Fashion Center, a major regional shopping destination. Northridge developed as a post-war suburban area, filling in with single-family homes, schools, and commercial corridors as the San Fernando Valley grew rapidly in the mid-twentieth century. The community gained wider recognition after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, a magnitude 6.7 event whose epicenter lay beneath the valley; the quake caused extensive damage across greater Los Angeles and led to widespread rebuilding and seismic-safety reforms. Many of the neighborhood's homes and commercial buildings were repaired or retrofitted in its aftermath, and the event remains part of the area's shared history. Today Northridge is defined by established residential streets, the large CSUN campus, and a network of commercial corridors including Reseda Boulevard, Devonshire Street, and Nordhoff Street. The neighborhood borders Granada Hills and Porter Ranch to the north, Chatsworth to the west, North Hills to the east, and Reseda to the south, placing it at the center of the west valley. Northridge appeals to a broad mix of households, including university students and staff, families, and commuters who work elsewhere in the valley or across greater Los Angeles. Its position along the 118 freeway and its Metrolink station make it a practical base for regional commuting, while the campus brings cultural events, educational resources, and steady activity to the community.
