Redondo Beach is a coastal city in Los Angeles County, California, occupying the southern stretch of the South Bay's three beach cities along Santa Monica Bay. Flanked by Hermosa Beach to the north and Torrance to the south and east, it combines a working harbor, a classic Southern California beachfront, and established residential neighborhoods. Its population was 71,576 in the 2020 census, and its name, Spanish for "round," reflects the curve of its shoreline. The city's history runs deep in the Los Angeles region. In the late 19th century, Redondo served as Los Angeles's first port, with piers that received tall ships and steamers before San Pedro assumed that role. The modern waterfront took shape in the mid-20th century, when King Harbor — named for Congressman Cecil R. King, who secured federal funding for its breakwater — was built and dedicated in 1966. Recreation defines daily life. The Strand, the celebrated beachfront bike and walking path, runs along the Esplanade and connects Redondo to Hermosa and Manhattan beaches. The harbor and pier are regional draws, and the marine layer that rolls in off the Pacific gives the city its mild coastal climate. Redondo's neighborhoods span a spectrum: inland North Redondo offers more single-family homes and larger lots, while South Redondo's Avenues, Golden Hills, and Riviera Village sit closer to the water. Redondo Beach Unified School District serves the city. With Los Angeles International Airport roughly a half-hour away and the aerospace, tech, and entertainment employment of the South Bay and Westside within commuting range, Redondo Beach offers a beach lifestyle with practical access to the wider Los Angeles economy.
