It began as a townsite laid out by a local founder who sold lots and named the place Harrisonia in his own honor; when postal authorities rejected the name as too similar to another Texas town, the community became Ringgold, taking the family name of the founder's wife. By the mid-1920s Ringgold had grown past 400 residents with eighteen businesses, a modest peak for a farming and ranching crossroads, before the decline of small-town agriculture reduced it to its present quiet scale of roughly 150 people.
