Red River Country Hamlet
Townhouses & Duplexes in Ringgold, TX
Welcome to Ringgold, the small Montague County community near the Red River, where Lake Nocona, the Gold-Burg schools, and wide North Texas ranchland set the pace.
Ringgold is a small unincorporated community in northwestern Montague County, Texas, set in the rolling ranchland of North Texas near the Red River and the Oklahoma state line. It began as a townsite laid out by a local founder who sold lots and named the place Harrisonia in his own honor; when postal authorities rejected the name as too similar to another Texas town, the community became Ringgold, taking the family name of the founder's wife. By the mid-1920s Ringgold had grown past 400 residents with eighteen businesses, a modest peak for a farming and ranching crossroads, before the decline of small-town agriculture reduced it to its present quiet scale of roughly 150 people. The community is defined today by the wide-open countryside around it — cattle pastures, hayfields, and pecan and oak bottomland along the Red River drainage. Ranching and farming remain the economic and cultural backdrop, and the town itself is a small collection of homes, churches, a volunteer fire department, and its one school. Ringgold's residents live at a deliberately unhurried pace, with the nearest fuller services in the nearby towns of Nocona and Bowie. Ringgold Elementary School anchors the community and is part of the consolidated Gold-Burg Independent School District, with older students attending schools in Stoneburg. Lake Nocona, a roughly 1,300-acre reservoir a short drive away, provides fishing, boating, and camping, and the Red River bottoms offer hunting and outdoor recreation. The county seat of Montague lies about twenty miles to the southeast. The community sits within reach of U.S. Highway 82 and U.S. Highway 287, the region's principal corridors, placing the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex roughly eighty to one hundred miles to the south. Ringgold suits those who want genuine North Texas ranchland, small-town familiarity, and a life organized around agriculture, the lake, and the river country.
