Galveston Bay Oyster Fishing Community
Apartments in San Leon, TX
Welcome to San Leon, an unincorporated Galveston County waterfront community on Galveston Bay, where shrimping, oystering, and bay views define a laid-back coastal way of life.
San Leon is an unincorporated community in Galveston County, Texas, occupying a small peninsula that extends into Galveston Bay, roughly 10 miles southwest of Kemah. The community was settled more than two centuries ago and has never incorporated, retaining the informal, water-oriented character of a coastal fishing village rather than a conventional municipality. The bay defines life here. San Leon's economy and culture have long been tied to the water, with shrimp, oyster, and crab harvesting at the center of local livelihoods. The area is known for its oysters, which draw on the brackish waters of the bay, and for a seafood scene anchored by longtime restaurants and dockside operations. A portion of the local fishing community has roots in Vietnamese families who settled in San Leon and neighboring Bacliff, adding to the area's distinctive coastal identity. The community is primarily residential, with a mix of older cottages, waterfront homes, and canal-side properties, and its population of roughly 5,000 grows on weekends and in summer as part-time residents arrive. San Leon, together with Bacliff and Bayview, forms one of the largest unincorporated communities on the mainland side of Galveston County. Public education is provided by the Dickinson Independent School District, which serves San Leon and much of the surrounding area. Its position on Galveston Bay gives many homes water access and views, and the community's waterfront restaurants and bars form the heart of its social life. For residents, San Leon offers bayfront living, fishing, and a relaxed pace, with the Houston metro area and Galveston Island both within reach.
