Somis is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the heart of Ventura County, California, set in the Las Posas Valley between the cities of Camarillo and Moorpark. It sits on the south bank of the Fox Barranca, just west of the Arroyo Las Posas, in productive agricultural country north of the Oxnard Plain. The community's origins are tied to the region's ranching history: it was established in 1892 by Thomas Bard and D.T. Perkins on a portion of the Rancho Las Posas Mexican land grant, and its name carries a Chumash origin, reflecting the area's deeper Native American past. Agriculture has defined Somis from the start and continues to do so today. Through the twentieth century the community became a center of citrus and avocado production, part of the same fertile growing region that made Ventura County a national leader in both crops. Today the landscape is a patchwork of avocado and citrus orchards, ornamental nurseries, and ranch properties, with some farms drawing attention for specialty crops grown in the valley's coastal-influenced climate.
