Welcome to Squaw Valley, a Sierra Nevada foothills community in Fresno County on State Route 180, just below Kings Canyon National Park.

Squaw Valley is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Fresno County, California, set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada along State Route 180, just below Kings Canyon National Park. With a population of 3,564 at the 2020 census, it is a dispersed rural community spread across roughly 200 square miles of low mountains between the Central Valley and the national park corridor. The community's origins reach back to the 1800s, when it was established as a cattle-ranching settlement in the Sierra foothills. Its historical name, Squaw Valley, reflects that frontier-era past, and the community has also come to be known as Yokuts Valley, a name adopted in 2023 to honor the region's Indigenous inhabitants. The area retains a working-rural character, with ranching, scattered homes, and, more recently, vineyards forming the local landscape. The foothill setting has shaped both the economy and the way of life. The Squaw Valley-Miramonte American Viticultural Area, established in 2015, recognizes the region as a distinct wine-growing area, and small vineyards and wineries are part of the local mix. The community also functions as a gateway to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, with Kings Canyon lying about 23 miles up the road and providing a steady flow of recreation-oriented travel through the area. For residents, Squaw Valley offers a foothill lifestyle defined by space and natural beauty. Students attend the Kings Canyon Unified School District, which serves the mountain communities along with the Central Valley towns of Reedley and Orange Cove. Fresno, the regional center, lies down the hill for employment, healthcare, and larger services. Squaw Valley is a place for those who want Sierra foothill living, proximity to national parks, and a measure of rural independence, all within reach of a major California city.
