Sun City is a 55+ active adult community in Riverside County, California, now a neighborhood of the city of Menifee. Developed by Del Webb beginning in the 1960s, it was the first master-planned retirement community of its kind in the area, built on former farmland in southwest Riverside County. Today the community encompasses roughly 4,700 residences, most of them part of the Sun City Civic Association, and it is home to approximately 27,000 residents, predominantly older adults. The community's origins reflect the rise of the active-adult lifestyle movement pioneered by Del Webb, whose first Sun City opened in Arizona in 1960. The Menifee-area Sun City brought that model to California, creating a self-contained community centered on golf, recreation centers, and social amenities designed for residents aged 55 and older. That heritage remains central to Sun City's identity, even as the surrounding region has grown dramatically. Administratively, Sun City was a census-designated place until 2008, when it joined with Quail Valley and Menifee to incorporate as the City of Menifee. Today it operates as a distinct neighborhood within that larger municipality, retaining its own community association and amenities while sharing in Menifee's civic services and growth. For residents, Sun City offers a low-maintenance, amenity-rich lifestyle. Students in the area attend Menifee Union School District elementary and middle schools and Perris Union High School District campuses, though the community's age-restricted housing means its population skews heavily toward retirees. The community's location in the Menifee-Temecula corridor provides access to shopping, healthcare, and the freeway network, while its golf courses, pools, and clubs remain the center of daily life.
