Santa Ana Mountain Foothills

Apartments in Trabuco Canyon, CA

Welcome to Trabuco Canyon, an unincorporated community in the foothills of Orange County's Santa Ana Mountains, where Cleveland National Forest meets O'Neill Regional Park.

Trabuco Canyon is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in eastern Orange County, California, tucked into the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains and running partly into the Cleveland National Forest. It sits in a canyon carved by Trabuco Creek, at the edge of Orange County's suburban development and the wilder backcountry beyond. The name "Trabuco" is Spanish for blunderbuss, a reference to the firearm reportedly lost or left behind by a member of the 1769 Gaspar de Portolá expedition, which camped in the area as Spanish explorers first pushed through what is now Orange County. That history places Trabuco Canyon among the earliest-documented corners of the region, long before the area became known for its later ranching, beekeeping, and homesteading families. The historic Trabuco Oaks settlement grew around the old Rowell family place, part of a beekeeping and ranching heritage that shaped the canyon. Today Trabuco Canyon is a semi-rural residential community that bridges suburban Orange County and the national forest. Housing clusters along canyon roads and in communities such as Rancho Trabuco, while much of the surrounding land remains open foothills and woodland. Residents enjoy close proximity to O'Neill Regional Park and the Holy Jim Canyon trail network, yet remain a short drive from the amenities of Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest, and Mission Viejo. Public schools are part of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, anchored locally by Trabuco Elementary School. With its canyon setting, equestrian character in places, and easy access to trailheads, Trabuco Canyon attracts those who want a foothill lifestyle without leaving Orange County's orbit.
