Wasco is a city in Kern County, California, in the southern San Joaquin Valley, about 24 miles northwest of Bakersfield. It began as a farm colony in the early twentieth century, when developers sold parcels to families drawn by the promise of irrigated agriculture. Most of the original colony lots were sold in the winter of 1907, and within months more than 200 families had arrived, only to discover that water rights were not included in their parcels. Drilling wells became an immediate concern, and some discouraged families left. The community was first known as Dewey and Deweyville before taking the name Wasco, and it incorporated in 1945, its growth following the region's deep soils, irrigation water, and rail access. Agriculture remains the city's economic backbone. Wasco is one of the world's most important centers of rose production, with large commercial nurseries that grow a substantial share of the roses sold across the United States, alongside almonds and other row and tree crops common to the valley. The BNSF Railway main line runs through the community, and the city's Amtrak station provides daily passenger service on the San Joaquin corridor, linking Wasco to Bakersfield, the Central Valley, and the Bay Area. The city has a compact, family-oriented core with neighborhoods that developed around its downtown and rail corridor, and newer subdivisions have expanded the housing stock as the community has grown. Public life is anchored by its schools, parks, and churches, and the surrounding farmland frames nearly every edge of the city. Wasco combines a working agricultural identity with straightforward access to Bakersfield's job market, higher education, and medical services, while the Pacific coast, the Sierra Nevada, and the Sequoia groves lie within a two-hour drive. For residents, Wasco offers small-city life in one of the nation's most productive farming regions.
