Lake Tawakoni Shore Community

Apartments in West Tawakoni, TX

Welcome to West Tawakoni, a Hunt County city on the western shore of Lake Tawakoni, known for its trophy catfish and lakeside living.

West Tawakoni is a city in southern Hunt County, Texas, situated on the western shore of Lake Tawakoni, one of the largest reservoirs wholly within the state at 37,879 acres. The 2020 census counted 1,895 residents. Its name and identity are inseparable from the lake, which was impounded on the Sabine River and has become a destination for fishing, boating, and lakeside living; the city's twin, East Tawakoni, lies across the water in Rains County. West Tawakoni functions as a lakeside residential and recreational community, with marinas, boat ramps, and waterfront homes defining much of its character. The lake is especially known for its trophy blue catfish, which draw anglers from across the region, along with striped and hybrid striped bass, white bass, crappie, and largemouth bass. Lake Tawakoni State Park, operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife, provides camping, hiking, and shoreline access on the lake's edge. The city is served by the Quinlan Independent School District, which covers southern Hunt County and also serves Quinlan and Hawk Cove. West Tawakoni maintains a mayor–council government, a police force, and a public library, serving a population that swells on weekends as visitors arrive for fishing and recreation. Housing ranges from modest lake cabins to larger waterfront residences, reflecting the community's evolution from a fishing-camp destination to a year-round lakeside town. The lake's open water and wooded shoreline frame nearly every part of the community. Its location roughly 45 miles east of Dallas and within a short drive of Greenville, Terrell, and Rockwall places it within commuting range of the Metroplex while keeping a distinctly rural, lake-centered lifestyle.
