Chambers County Rice Country
Apartments in Winnie, TX
Welcome to Winnie, a Chambers County community at the junction of Interstate 10 and State Highway 124, rooted in rice farming along the Upper Texas Gulf Coast.
Winnie is a census-designated place in Chambers County, Texas, on the flat coastal prairie of the Upper Texas Gulf Coast. It sits at the junction of Interstate 10 and State Highway 124, about twenty-five miles southwest of Beaumont and roughly sixty miles east of Houston across Trinity Bay. The community was platted in 1895 with the completion of the Gulf and Inter-state Railway and was named for Fox Winnie, a contractor on the line. Rice farming has been central to Winnie's identity from its earliest days, and agriculture — particularly rice, cattle, and hay — remains woven into the local economy, alongside oil and gas, retail, and the commerce that Interstate 10 brings through town. The community's location on a major east-west corridor made it a transportation and trade hub and continues to shape its role as a stopping point and commuter base. The 2020 census recorded a population of about 3,160. Winnie and neighboring Stowell share a close relationship, cohosting the annual Texas Rice Festival, a long-running celebration of the region's rice heritage that draws visitors from across the area. Public education is provided by the East Chambers Independent School District, which serves Winnie, Stowell, and Seabreeze and operates East Chambers High School in Winnie. The community's position between Beaumont and Houston places it within reach of the petrochemical, port, and industrial employment of the Golden Triangle and the greater Houston area, while its coastal setting offers access to fishing, hunting, and wildlife areas. Residents include long-established rice-farming families as well as workers in regional industry drawn by the affordable housing and open space. For homebuyers, Winnie offers affordable, small-town living with wide-open space and direct interstate access to the region's job centers, making it a practical base for both rural and commuter lifestyles along the Upper Texas Gulf Coast.
