Bay Point is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, on the southern shore of Suisun Bay, just west of Pittsburg and northeast of Concord. The 2020 census recorded 23,896 residents, making it one of the larger unincorporated communities in eastern Contra Costa County. The community has carried several names. It was long known as West Pittsburg before being renamed Bay Point in 1993 to reflect its bay-side location and its own identity, and earlier still it was called Bella Vista. Its history is rooted in early twentieth-century industry along the waterfront and rail corridor, and the area later developed as a residential community serving East Bay employment centers. Today Bay Point is a diverse, working-class and middle-class area with a substantial immigrant population and a high share of households of color. Transit defines much of modern Bay Point. The Pittsburg/Bay Point station on BART's Yellow Line sits adjacent to the community and functions as a major transfer point, connecting riders to the BART-to-Antioch extension and onward to Oakland and San Francisco. Many residents use the station for daily commutes, reinforcing Bay Point's role as a gateway to the wider Bay Area and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. State Route 4 and Tri Delta Transit buses provide additional road and local transit connections. Bay Point suits buyers seeking more approachable single-family housing within Contra Costa County, with direct BART access to East Bay and San Francisco job centers, at the cost of a more auto- and transit-dependent daily pattern than the county's more established suburbs. Its waterfront setting on Suisun Bay and its proximity to the Delta give it a geographic identity distinct from the inland suburbs.
