Bellmead is a city in east-central McLennan County, Texas, situated on State Highway 31 about two miles northeast of downtown Waco and within the Waco metropolitan area. Its population is roughly 10,500, and its position along the region's primary transportation corridors has shaped both its economy and its growth. The city's history reaches back to the Tomás de la Vega Spanish land grant, from which the La Vega school district later took its name, and the land passed through several owners before the community took its modern form. Bellmead's defining growth spurt came in the mid-1920s, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad selected the site for its locomotive shops, employing several hundred workers and drawing families to the area. That industrial heritage, followed by substantial post-World War II residential expansion, established Bellmead as a working-class railroad and industrial suburb on Waco's northeast flank. Over the decades, Waco grew around Bellmead through a series of annexations, leaving the city an independent municipality encircled by its larger neighbor. Today Bellmead is closely integrated with Waco's daily life. Its location on Interstate 35, Loop 340, and Highway 84 gives residents direct access to Baylor University, Texas State Technical College, and McLennan Community College, as well as the region's employers, hospitals, and commercial centers. The city itself remains largely residential, with modest post-war housing stock and a significant share of manufactured housing, plus a mix of newer middle-income subdivisions. Public education is provided mainly by La Vega Independent School District, formed in 1927 and named for the historic de la Vega grant; the district serves most of Bellmead along with parts of Waco and Lacy-Lakeview. For recreation, residents are just minutes from Cameron Park, a 416-acre municipal park on the Brazos and Bosque rivers with trails, overlooks, and a zoo. Bellmead's appeal lies in its attainability and its unbeatable highway position — a straightforward, no-frills community that keeps the amenities of a major Texas metro area close at hand.
