Cayucos is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on California's Central Coast, set along Highway 1 where the hills of San Luis Obispo County meet Estero Bay. It lies between the arts-oriented village of Cambria to the north and the waterfront city of Morro Bay to the south, roughly twenty miles from San Luis Obispo. The 2020 census counted about 2,500 year-round residents, a number that swells with visitors and second-home owners in the summer months. The town's origins trace to 1867, when Captain James Cass, a New England sea captain, settled the area and began developing a shipping point for the region's agricultural and dairy products. Cass built the wooden pier that remains the community's signature landmark, extending nearly 1,000 feet into the Pacific and serving today as a gathering place for fishing, strolling, and watching the waves. The name Cayucos comes from the small canoes, or cayucos, used by the Chumash people to fish the bay's kelp beds.
