Duarte is a city in Los Angeles County, California, in the San Gabriel Valley at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. With about 21,700 residents, it sits along Huntington Drive, the historic alignment of U.S. Route 66, and is bordered by Monrovia and Bradbury to the west, Irwindale to the south, and Azusa to the east. The city's history is rooted in the rancho era. The Gabrielino, or Tongva, people inhabited the area before 1841, when Governor Juan Alvarado granted nearly 7,000 acres to former Mexican corporal Andrés Duarte, who named it Rancho Azusa de Duarte. The grant was later subdivided into smaller parcels, many of which became citrus groves that shaped the upper San Gabriel Valley's agricultural identity, and the community that grew from it took the ranchero's name. Duarte incorporated as a city in 1957. Today Duarte is best known as the headquarters of City of Hope, a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center whose 110-acre main campus anchors the city's economy and brings a substantial healthcare and research presence. The city's schools are part of the Duarte Unified School District, which also serves neighboring Bradbury and nearby unincorporated areas, and the district's compact size gives it a close community feel.
