Lawndale is a city in Los Angeles County, California, in the South Bay region of greater Los Angeles, surrounded by the cities of Hawthorne, Torrance, and Gardena and situated a short distance inland from the Pacific coast. Incorporated in 1959, it is a dense, working-class and family-oriented community with an urban-suburban character, and a substantial share of its roughly 31,800 residents rent their homes. The city's development reflects the mid-twentieth-century growth of the South Bay, with a housing stock that mixes older single-family homes, duplexes, and apartment buildings on a compact street grid. Its neighborhoods are diverse and tightly built, and the city's small footprint places residents close to the employment, retail, and transportation corridors that define the region. Education is a central part of Lawndale's civic life. The Lawndale Elementary School District serves students through eighth grade, while the Centinela Valley Union High School District, headquartered in the city, operates Lawndale High School, Hawthorne High School, and Leuzinger High School for the area's high school students. The 405 freeway runs along its western edge, the 105 freeway lies nearby, and Hawthorne Boulevard and Redondo Beach Boulevard are major surface routes.
