North Fork is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Madera County, California, in the Sierra Nevada foothills at the western edge of the Sierra National Forest. The 2020 census counted 3,250 residents, and the community's name comes from the north fork of the San Joaquin River drainage that shapes the surrounding terrain. North Fork's Mono name translates roughly to "cedar grove," a fitting description of the pine and cedar country that surrounds the town. The area is the traditional homeland of the North Fork Mono people. After displacement from the valley floor and higher Sierra, the Mono population concentrated around North Fork, where a Presbyterian mission was established in 1903. Today the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians, with an enrollment of about 1,800 and one of California's largest tribes, occupies an 80-acre rancheria along the western edge of the national forest.
