San Pedro sits at the southern terminus of the Harbor Freeway (Interstate 110), which runs north through the Los Angeles Basin to downtown Los Angeles, about 25 miles away. The Vincent Thomas Bridge carries traffic across the main channel to Terminal Island and Long Beach, and the surrounding freeway network links the community to the wider region. The Port of Los Angeles and its terminals dominate local freight movement, while LA Metro bus lines serve the community and connect to the regional transit system. Most residents rely on cars, though the waterfront and downtown are increasingly walkable for daily errands.

San Pedro's coastline anchors its recreation. Cabrillo Beach offers swimming and shoreline access, while Point Fermin Park and its 1874 lighthouse provide cliffside views and open space. The Korean Bell of Friendship sits in Angels Gate Park, a hilltop site overlooking the ocean, near the Fort MacArthur Museum and its preserved coastal-defense batteries. On the waterfront, the Battleship USS Iowa operates as a museum ship. The marina, harbor cruises, and the cliffside "Sunken City" ruins at Point Fermin add to a recreation scene built around the ocean, maritime history, and harbor views.
